Why insurance for toddler groups is necessary
Working with children and families brings a duty of care and a responsibility to manage risk.
Your group could be held liable for accidents involving children, safeguarding issues, damage to venues or equipment, or allegations linked to advice or activities provided.
Many local authorities, funders and venue providers require evidence of insurance before allowing you to run sessions.
What Your Parent & Toddler Insurance Can Include:
- Public Liability Insurance – covers you in the event an allegation is made that your negligence leads to injuries to children, parents and visitors or damage to hired community halls or church spaces
- Employers’ Liability Insurance – essential if you have staff or volunteers helping run sessions
- Abuse cover – to protect your organisation in case of abuse allegations (normally this is part of your public liability section of your baby and parent group’s insurance policy)
- Professional Indemnity Insurance – for groups offering advice, parenting support or development sessions
- Contents and Equipment Insurance – covering toys, mats, play equipment and supplies
- Trustee Indemnity – protecting committee members, group leaders or organisers
- Legal Expenses Insurance – for the costs of legal action and disputes
- We tailor cover to suit the activities and structure of your group – whether you’re an informal community group, part of a church, or a registered charity.

Your questions answered.
It can do, but we would always want to make sure that your insurer is happy with the equipment you are using.
Some policies have an exclusion for soft play equipment as insurers picture the risks of large soft play centres.
We will make sure that if you are using soft play equipment, that the insurer understands what you are using and that your policy is suitable for your needs.
Yes.
Even occasional sessions carry risk, especially when working with children. Insurance helps protect your group if something goes wrong.
It’s recommended.
If anyone volunteers with your group, we recommend Public Liability Insurance to cover claims as a result of accidental injury or property damage cause by a volunteer.
As part of your duty of care, you should also consider Employers’ Liability insurance to defend against allegations brought by volunteers if they are injured whilst volunteering.
Public Liability Insurance can cover claims resulting from accidental injuries to children, parents or other attendees.
Often yes. Many halls require you to hold your own Public Liability cover as a condition of hire. We can also cover equipment you bring in.
It might also be the case that the hiring facility is the party that makes an allegation against you if your negligence led to damage to their property.
Sometimes organisations may wish to consider abuse cover, for allegations of abuse, when working with children or adults. This cover can be taken out on different bases so working with an experienced adviser like Access is recommended.
Most insurers will have an expectation that you have a safeguarding policy and that volunteers are subject to a DBS check. You would be expected to maintain records and training in this area for the policy to protect you.
We will help you understand the requirements for your insurance policy.
Yes. Contents and Equipment Insurance can be included for the items you use during your sessions, whether stored on-site or transported.
